Recommended for people with suspected gluten intolerance and celiac disease

Celiac disease is a chronic digestive problem that affects the lining of the small intestine and blocks absorption of nutrients from food. The condition is characterized by a sensitivity to gluten (found in wheat, barley and rye) that causes inflammation and atrophy of the villi of the small intestine. If the disease is not accurately diagnosed and treated, it can lead to malnutrition and other serious problems.

Who should get screened:

  1. Children older than 3 and adults experiencing symptoms of celiac disease
  2. First-degree relatives of people diagnosed with celiac disease
  3. Individuals with an associated disorder such as; type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, autoimmune liver disease, Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Williams syndrome.

How to prepare:

Do not drink any alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours prior to the test. Individuals must be on a gluten containing diet for antibody testing to be accurate.
